The View From The Bridge

I love bridges… at least I love looking at them. Standing out in the middle of them, not so much.

If I’ve taken one picture of this railroad bridge over the years, I’ve taken at least a hundred. So the other day I finally got up the nerve to walk out into the middle of it and take a few pictures of the river from a new vantage point. Lemme tell ya… that river looks a lot wider when you’re in the middle of the bridge than it does when you’re standing on the side!

Anyways, here’s the view looking north up the Otonabee River:

A Scenic Ride

These are a couple of shots that my son took on one of his bike rides out on the river road.

The building in this shot is the Bata Library at Trent University — a place where I spent more hours of my life than I care to think about at this point in time. :)

Enjoying the Sun

It’s been so warm and sunny here that I’ve spent the better part of the last two afternoons outside just soaking it up. I still have a hard time believing I could be out in shorts at the beginning of April, but am definitely not complaining about it. :)

These were taken on a wander through Jackson Park Friday afternoon…

Signs of Spring

One thing I’ve noticed is that every time I walk the park trails I see something different. It doesn’t seem to matter how many times I look at, and photograph the same view, there’s always something new in it.

This time, walking the trail yielded a couple of views I’ve never seen before because usually when I’m down here there is so much growth that you can’t really see what’s actually on the banks. I had no idea that there were all these little run-off areas that fed into the river before now. It was really nice to see the snow melting and running down the banks. :)

And another sure sign of spring… the geese are arriving! I tried to get them actually coming in for their landing, but I wasn’t fast enough.

And just to add the icing on the cake … two non-photographic signs of spring… I slept with the windows open last night for the first time in months, and heard doves outside my window when I woke up this morning. Makes me very happy indeed that things are finally starting to warm up a bit around here. :)

Shadows on the Snow

We definitely had a lot more snow last February than we have had so far this year. This was taken in early February 2009, and was in a series I’d forgotten about because it was stored on a different computer. The first one is the original, straight out of the camera. This morning I had the urge to make it black and white, and I almost think I like that version better. What do you think?

A Country Drive

It didn’t go as well as I’d planned because there was just too much ice built up on the sides of the roads to pull over but we did manage to snap a few shots:

My Afternoon Stroll

I finally had enough of sitting inside and braved the cold yesterday to go for a stroll along the river. I ended up being out for about two hours, and even got in a stop at my favourite second-hand bookshop on the way home. :)

This is one of my favorite trees to hang out under in the summer. I had no idea it was so bent over until I saw it without leaves today!
