About Helena

My name is Helena Ritchie, and this is my personal blog. Over the course of my life I’ve been a writer, researcher, and musician among other things. This blog is where I muse on whatever topic catches my fancy at the moment.

I started this blog as a catch-all for writing on subjects that don’t really fit anywhere else. Over the last year it’s pretty much turned into a photo blog, although I did take a 4-month sabbatical from blogging anywhere on any topic this summer. I write on specific topics on a few other sites, and I’ll tell you about those in a moment. For now though, here’s a peek behind the curtain at who I am and why I love what I do.

I’m a 40-something Canadian living in a small city just outside Toronto. For most of my adult life I’ve been a single mom, and wouldn’t have it any other way. The boy’s pretty much grown up now and I fully expect him to leave the nest before too long. My two forays into the world of marriage were pretty much doomed from the start — one of these days, I’ll learn to listen to that little voice in my head when it yells “Run!” :)

Writing a personal blog is a big step for me. My life experiences up to this point have turned me into almost a hermit in a lot of ways. It wasn’t until the summer of 2008 when I got divorced, and my son got me golf lessons for Mother’s Day that something actually shifted inside me and I decided that maybe I’d like to rejoin the land of the living. As an introvert it’s not easy to put yourself out there at the best of times; as an introvert who has hidden away from the world for several years, it’s terrifying. I’m looking at it as an adventure in finding my own voice, and a new direction after years of hiding myself.

In addition to this blog, I also write on personal growth topics at The Path to Personal Growth, on the joys of being a type 2 diabetic at The Diabetic Chick’s blog, and on internet marketing at The Introverted Marketer. As of September 2010, I also am publishing a weekly personal growth newsletter at The Acorn Stash, and a brand new blog on overcoming fear and building self-esteem called Outside My Comfort Zone.

My offline interests include photography, golfing, and reading, and going to the gym. I still play the piano whenever I get the chance, and there’s always music on somewhere in the house — country is the genre of choice most days, but I’m also a huge classical and big band fan.

So there you have it … a quick peek at who Helena Ritchie is. If what I’ve shared here resonates with you, I’d love to hear from you. Please feel free to leave me a comment on one of my posts. Unless it’s clearly spam, I read and respond to all posts, usually within a few hours. You can also find me on select social networks, and we can connect there if you’re so inclined.
